So, after weeks of heated speculation – the Australian Interior Authority campaign has been revealed.
Most who’ve been following the story know by now that the campaign has reached its conclusion, and many have been caught off guard by the surprising outcome. Instead of the movie, game, or even tobacco industry that it was widely speculated to be supporting, the answer is intended to inspire even more debate. The thought-provoking campaign is actually for the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Canberra and the rights we seem to have forgotten that we have.
Even if some were eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new dystopian film or alternate reality game, the campaign has without a doubt served as a stark reminder to Australians of the kind of laws other countries have imposed on their citizens, and by comparison the freedoms we still enjoy.
The site that you are now redirected to when you visit the Australian Interior Authority site (ourfreedom.com.au) reminds us of the freedom we have all grown up with in Australia.
Hopefully this has all had the effect it was after – that is, an awareness of the complacency some of us are displaying in Australia for something that citizens of many countries are literally fighting for. We each hold the right to voice an opinion, gather in public, stand up for our beliefs, follow our own religions without fear of persecution, and continue our family life without government intervention. This surely is a more inspirational topic than an alternate reality game.
All in all – an interesting and compelling story has been told. And it’s certainly raised some issues and discussion. I’d love to hear your thoughts, as I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been touched by the issues the campaign has brought up.
Stay tuned for information on Australia’s first ‘Have Your Say’ Day, coming up next week! I’ll be helping spread the word, and so can you!
